Worth it? If I got this I'd be hooking it up to a cable-ready TV - no cable box. No HDTV or anything.
I got this a while ago. I wonder if they'll let me get a new one for next year?
I'm curious to know if my purchase will go through.
From the TiVo site:
Terms & Conditions: (1) This discounted pre-paid TiVo Package is only available to sales representatives employed at participating authorized retailers who purchase, between July 1, 2006 and October 31, 2006, an 80-hr TiVo® Series2™ DVR w/1 year of service, or an 80-hr TiVo® Series2™ DT DVR with dual tuners, via a special landing page located at http://tivo.com/accommodation.
As I don't have a job I looked up a Best Buy store at the BB site and it included a store number (required information). If it works I am the proud owner of a DT TiVo. If not, oh well.
Also there is a $150 rebate form on their site.
Got this when it was offered a few months ago.. and it is a great deal..However, "rumor" has it that after the first year, anyone who purchased at this special price can only continue service after the first year at $17 to $20 per month, or, if the card used for purchase is still valid, they will continue to automatically bill at that rate!! The rate to continue service for normal purchasers is $13 per month..
$17-20 instead of $13? Ouch! The Series 3 is $600 to buy.
From nukem over at FW:
After the year is up you can sign up for another full year of service and drop the fee to normal prices (12.95 for only Tivo, $6.95 for multi Tivo account) or it will auto renew each month for $19.95. - Assuming pricing is the same a year from now.
OK, #1 and anyone else that wants to know:
I purchased it last time Ben ran this deal for $83 and it has been the best spent $83 in a while!!! and no we don't have a cable box either, just basic cable, but it's well worth the money. In addition to recording all our favorite shows, we also record movies that play on the weekends or late at night and haven't had to rent from Blockbuster or any other Rapists!
The only thing I must say is that if you use sunrocket or any other voip service you must I repeat must buy the Tivo adapter. Search through this weeks (or last) deals as he had one for like $35!!!!
Anyone know if TiVo has fixed the glitches they had when hooked up to a Dish Network receiver?
I agree #7 - I am in love with my TiVo (I tried to build a PVR out of a PC, but it pretty much sucked). This does everything I wanted that PVR to do: record shows (of course), pause live shows (yeah, yeah), transfer shows to my pc, put those shows on DVD, listen to my pc's music collection - even plays winamp playlists. I use the tivo2go software with a wireless usb connection, videoredo to transcode the programs to mpeg and sonic DVDit to produce the DVD's. From what I understand this is the low-end TiVo and that the other units are more responsive. In other words, the channels change a little slow and the tv guide takes a second or two to show up on the screen. I would like a faster unit, but otherwise the interface is slick, the headaches are few and my viewing experience is great!
Don't worry about what to do at the end of the year... Even if you throw this unit in the trash after one year.
You are saving _$72_ by not having to pay for the first year of service.
This unit is a good deal for anyone paying $12.95 per month (for tivo service and are not currently on a one year plan).
So buy this one and activate it and then cancel your old one. (to keep them both costs only 6.95/month if you're interested.)
At the end of the year you'll probably get a better price than the current $600.00 for a High Def Tivo.
I have a series2 w/lifetime. Still trying to figure out if I want a Series3 and transfer the lifetime for $200 ($1000 total)- and get a year of service on my Series2.

I got mine yesterday (from this deal) no problems no questions asked. As I said above I used a Best Buy store number from internet.
I also used a best buy store number from Best Buy's web site. Mine shipped out yesterday.
