I've seen this at Target on clearance for $150. I don't think it requires activation of Tivo service.

If you don't activate the tivo service, you loose the functions that people purchase a tivo for.

#3- that would be the same PC Mag who declared Windows dead about 15 yrs ago and IBM's OS/2 the winner?

I made some money shorting tivo stock a few years ago. Have they EVER made a profit?

People smart enough to build their own computers should be using a mythtv or other device without the high monthly charge of tivo.

#1 I do not heard of anyone making use of a tivo box, without a subscription. Too bad, because a used box would be very cheap to buy.

I live in the sticks and can't get cable so I have DirecTv. I currently have non HD Tivo and love it, but I want to find an HD Tivo like solution. Will MythTV work with DirecTv? Are there any other HD solutions for DirecTv?

    HR10-250 (obsolete, but TiVo)
    HR20 (non-TiVo)

You may be able to use a tivo as a VCR (g, set the time to record on a desired channel) without a subscription, but that is a pain in the arse and defeats the purpose.

Tivo S2 is a boat anchor w/out a sub. An old S1 can do manual recordings like VCR.
