It doesn't work with DirectTV. This is a cablecard version.

This also doesn't work with SDV (switched digital networks) like the one that Time Warner is rolling out across the country. Switched networks require the receiver to send a signal when it attempts to receive a switched channel -- the cable system then dynamically allocates a channel (or selects the same one your neighbors may already be watching) and tells the cable box the frequency to tune to. So TIVO won't be able to receive all digital channels, even with cable cards. This is the main reason I haven't jumped yet.

I like TiVo, but it would take more than eight years to cover the cost of this box vs. renting the DVR from the cable company!

Yes, but it would definitely work better. The SA8300HD (if that's what you have) with the SARA S records well, but the scheduling software is awful -- hard to use and unreliable. It likes to inexplicably stop recording 40 minutes into an hour-long program, and when a scheduled series program moves so there's a 3-way conflict, it sometimes won't record anything at all. Lots of little glitches that add up to a huge annoyance.

The cable companies need to get their act together and produce a viable TIVO competitor (currently, price is their only advantage) or speed the implementation of the two-way cable cards. Unfortunately, this box won't be able to use them.

#7, ...or better yet, the cable companies should license the TIVO software (or even the ReplayTV software).
