Acording to Newegg "it's compatible with RDS-TMC traffic updates with an optional receiver." So, does it come with traffic support or is it optional?

Read the reviews - traffic updates don't work with Verizon cellphones and Mapshare feature is good for 1 year.

So is there an optional receiver that can be purchased so one does not have to use the cell phone of not? It would be nice if they had something like a satellite radio receiver that could just get the maps.

yes you can buy a receiver. traffic updates are only when you have a monthly subscription.

Note that i am not sure if the gps is refurbished or not. I have a refurbished one. Works great. Only bad thing is that the 'latest map guarantee' is not valid, so the map you have might be a year old or so.

Mapshare corrections work, but I rather had the full latest map.
