This model does not have text to speech, ie. it cannot say street name; but will tell you roughly how far you are to go before the turn. I suggest getting the TomTom One 140S, which does have it for just $10 more.

I concur with # 1. Check the specs on new egg:

"Audio Features Turn-by-Turn Spoken Instructions are announced loudly and clearly"

It does not say anything about text to speech. Read the reviews, the 140s has text to speech.

#2 can you back up your statement? Please share with everyone why tom tom is crap, thanks.

#2 to each their own. In our family we had a Nuvi 750 and that thing took over 4 minutes to position the satellites and forget about ever getting a POI search back.

I have both TomTom and Garmin and have found the Garmin trip algorithm to be very lacking. It constantly tells you to take surface streets (with tons of lights) when you are on a super highway -- this is with the setting to calculate for shortest time. I think it tries to do something very sophisticated such as keeping track of your average speed on various kinds of roads (and doesn't do it correctly) or it is just has poor estimates of what your actual speed is on surface streets (with lights, good luck doing 15 MPH but I think it assumes the posted limit of 25 MPH).

The Garmin (mine is a C580) has a ton more features such as being a speaker phone for your cell while in the car. Very safety minded but the trip algorithm is so poor you will end spending 10% to 20% more time getting where you're going.
