Anyone tried the refurbished ones out? How reliable are they?

I got one a few weeks ago. Seems like a brand new unit to me.
Factory reconditioned directly from TomTom. They could have sold it as new and I would have never known the difference, and I am picky.

The problem with the refurb units is - their "latest map guarantee" is disabled. But if you call them and do a little social engineering you can still get them to unlock the latest map for you. It just takes a little work.

I got the refurb from Radio Shack deal last week. Looks like a brand new unit and the "Latest Map Guaranteed" work without having to call them.

#4, using the phrase "social engineering" makes you sound like a B-school monkey. Shifted any paradigms lately?

We bought one a few weeks ago from buy.com and used it on a 32-hour round trip to Michigan (family obligation - nephew's graduation) last week. It worked great. Like others have noted above, I would never be able to tell this is a refurbished model. It's my first GPS so I'm no expert but as a thrifty newbie I would highly recommend it to others, like me, who are looking for an easy-to-use no-frills GPS.
