Go for the ONE XL-S. It has TTS. An excellent device.

Circuit City, I believe, has it for $299 with a $100 rebate. You might want to check into that.

Thanks for the tip. I would have figured this one had TTS, especially since the One 2nd ed, 3rd ed and LE don't either.

No... the XL is basically just the ONE with a wide screen. (Xtra Long?). The XL-S has that added S, which I assume is their code for speech, since it has the TTS capability.

Text-to-speech is fairly useless. It simply makes the GPS unit read the street name in the "turn right in 400 yards" message. Considering the fact that the graphic image on the screen is the primary indicator of the street you're turning on, the fact that you know the name of the street you're turning onto is lame since for it to be of any use would mean that you have to start craning your head around trying to verify the name on a street sign. Forget it. "Turn right in 400 yards" coupled with the picture of the street on the screen is enough.

to each his own, but some people like my wife prefer the TTS for the simple fact that when you get to the street it simply tells you which street you're turning on. if there are 2 streets close to each other some people might have a hard time figuring out where to turn.

plus some people aren't good with the yards and feets

Thank you for expressing it so well #4 - I completely agree.
Everyone is so high maintenance these days saying they can not live without TTS.

You shouldn't be looking at the picture while driving. You should be looking at the road.

Thanks, Ben! I never did get the NewEgg discount from the other day to work even after subscribing to their newsletter. $250 with no rebates is about the best one can find the XL-S anywhere, and Dell is a solid merchant.

I'm a very satisfied owner of a 1st gen TomTom Go ("Classic") that has served my wife well for the past three years, and this is half the price we paid for the Classic back in '04. TomTom's are a bit hackable, and you can add extra voices, color schemes, car icons (to replace the directional arrow) and other geek applications.

I have the TT One 3rd Edition, and while TTS would be nice, it doesnt really matter too much to me. I can see the street name in the corner if I want. My friend's phone has GPS w/ TTS and it is pretty nifty. But is TTS really worth the $100 cost difference over TT One 3rd edition? Up to you. It's not for me.

I personally would never get a GPS without TTS... but I suppose most of that comes from being on a motorcycle where you just don't want to look down if you don't need to.

I think it's a good feature in areas you aren't familiar with (which turns out to be frequently if you're using the GPS for directions).

      To each their own.

Personally, I'd get the Garmin Nuvi 650 from Costco. (Well, really I'm gonna get the Zumo 550, but that's not really a competitor here).

The main problem with TomTom and Garmin is that their satellites are bound to overload with all of the people that will be getting these for the Christmas rush. When that happens, the Garmin and TomTom GPS satellites will crash much like a server does when too many people visit a site all at once. The satellites for the lesser known brands will not receive the GPS beams from as many units. Pharo,Omitech,Nextar etc...
Also, the GPS beams will interfere with E-Z Pass to prevent bridge and tunnel crossings.
#4 is a complete imbecile. TTS is the only feature that these things are worth having for.

      #12:

You got to be kidding, right?

Do radio stations get jammed because of too many listeners?
Do TV stations get jammed because of too many viewer?
If not, then don't worry about GPS machines, they just receive the radio signal from satellites, they don't talk back.

Besides, Tomtom and Garmin don't own the satellites, the signals from the satellites are FREE gift from Uncle Sam.

I got XL-S as a gift. I have used it for 3 weeks and haven't found that it could read out street names. It does tell you "turn right in 400 yards... (400 yards later) Turn right" 'n if you (accidentally) make a wrong turn, it auto. calculates the new route.
Likes: many speaking languages to choose from; alternative routes; "dry-run" animation; touch screen
      Dislikes: menus do not have BACK button; instead it loops; short battery life;
This is no first GPS, and I guess I am trying to compare it to GoogleMap or GoogleEarth, and it's definitely not as sexy. BUT it does tell you where you are.

#14, just a heads up, this GPS will only speak street names (Text To Speech) with the default, computer voice. If you try to use another voice it will not speak the street names.
