Refurbished units work well but do not qualify for free updated maps. Updated maps can cost more then the unit itself. They do work without updates.

TomTom US&Canda runs $50 for an update. They sent me a $10 coupon so it would have been $40. Not bad but since I paid about the same as this one will just wait another year and get a new GPS. Some have free life time traffic updates that would be handy. When I bought mine 2 years ago you only get one map update free and must be done within 1 year of purchase so need to time it with the new map release cycle. Could be different now.
