#1 - Strike now at a Menards or a Home Depot. I bought mine 2 years ago at this time of year, there are plenty in stock, and they seem to run rebates right now. I was able to buy a Toro and get a $50 Home Depot card. I also opened a Home Depot credit card at the same time and I think I got another 10% off. Everyone was laughing at me for buying one so early in the season, but I got the best deal then.

BUFFALO TODAY - Rare early October snowstorm left parts of western New York blanketed with 2 feet of snow Friday morning, prompting widespread blackouts, closing schools and halting traffic. The snow downed scores of tree limbs and toppled power lines, leaving more than 155,000 customers without electricity.

I promise not to laugh #4!

It snowed yesterday in the Minneapolis area yesterday. Never too early to be prepared. My brother has an 8 horse self-propelled model from a garage sale.

This is actually a nice little thrower. I bought this last year at the end of the season. Still have yet to try it out but the reviews are very good on it.

    Technical Details
    * Maintenance-free: : Electric motor; no parts to lubricate; no parts to lubricate; and no recoil to pull
    * 10-inch depth of cut and 18-inch clearing width
    * Throws snow up to 30 feet
    * Clears 700 lbs. of snow per minute and scrapes it down to the pavement
    * Lightweight (24 lbs.) and easy to handle

    Disadvantages:
Cord falls into just plowed area and is slippery if you step on it while attacking the next pile.
Wet snow occasionally packs in chute.
Handle to direct chute could be closer.
    Advantages:
No fire hazard, oil changes, tuneups, bad or too little gas.
Throws snow farther than the old paddle type units.

" more than 155,000 customers without electricity."
This wouldn't be much use to them, while their gasoline-powered neighbors get all their work done so they can watch TV when the electricity comes back on.

I had to chuckle at the 4" of fluff the guy was blowing on the Amazon picture. But the driveway full of 2' of snow of the customer who "loves this blower" was more impressive.

I would go with an Ariens two stage. It will go though anything. The inexpensive ones bog down in wet snow.

You guys should just be using a shovel since all of you have girly arms. I know that doesn't leave much time for web surfing and massturrbatiion, but it's for the best.

I got one of these last year for about $25 less than this price. Last winter we had one snow in the DC area that needed plowing. Need any more proof of global warming? This thrower did a good job. You just need to plow when the snow gets to 4" even if you plow a couple of times. The cord is a little bit of a hassle, but being electric I can store it in my basement and not smell gas.

Sure I want a self-propelled Ariens and look at them when I go to Home Depot, but this Toro is the most practical solution for the little snow we get. And this model works a lot better than the lower priced Toro electric.

I got one of these electric jobbers at a garage sale for $5 to clean the deck. It works only on very light, dry snow. Honestly, a shovel is easier than using/storing/maintaining this thing.
