Newegg has the TRENDnet TEG-S50G 5-Port Gigabit GREENnet Switch for $25 - $10 rebate [Exp 3/31] = $15 with free shipping. GREENnet technology automatically adjusts power voltage as needed, resulting in substantial energy savings. [Compare]

Newbie question: will connecting these together work if I need more ports?

#1, instead of two of this, you should consider the 8-port Rosewill: http://bensbargains.net/deal/133943/

I have this switch. None of my devices auto-negotiate to 1Gbs. As far as I can tell this thing is junk if you want full gigabit speeds. If you simply need an inexpensive switch with low power consumption, and speed doesn't matter, sure. If you need a good GIGABIT switch, this isn't it.

I can't say about this switch but I have the 8 port version and jumbo frames worked great. I bought the 8 port switch from New Egg for $15 after $20 rebate on Black Friday.

Your cables suck. Get better cables. I've had no problems getting this switch to negotiate 1gbps except when I was trying to use a 10 year old self-terminated cat5 patch.

Yes, but keep in mind that routing through multiple devices will lower your overall throughput. You can get an 8-port version of this switch for just a few bucks more.

Works great 1000 MB/S on my network as I type GREAT DEAL (all of your devices must be Gigabit for your network to run at this speed.

@1 and 7, Layer 2 switches don't route. As a result any device not on the same switch as the one it's trying to contact will broadcast to all devices. Connecting multiple switches can cause broadcast storms that cripple your network. That said, 2 switches shouldn't be a real big deal, but you'll likely end up paying the difference powering 2 switches anyway so why skimp?

The better reason to use multiple switches is if it makes stringing wire easier or shorter runs.

#5, some switches need power cycled after plugging gigabit clients into them, did you do that?

    Not true.

Forgive my ambiguous use of the word "route". You're correct two switches isn't really a big deal, but with the price difference we're talking about here, better to do it right.

I've had this switch for 4 months. It connects together 3 PCs that each have 1Gbps ports with no problem and I see fast file transfer speeds.

#5, I have 4 devices connected to this and all automatically run at gigabit speeds. You have other issues that aren't related to this switch. I have this switch and it works great. Haven't had a single issue with it in over 5 months.

I'll try new cables... But one device (Thinkpad laptop) was connected to the switch with a short, high quality cable... No gigabit luv for me.

Good to see others are getting full gigabit speeds.

#14 check out the setting of your laptop. It might be set lower than the Gbit rate some how.

    Go to network connection
right click on your LAN device -> properties -> configuration
then check each one items out

TrendNet devices are hit and miss, I had a Gb/laptop PMCMCI? express access card and it heated up both the card and laptop tremendously.

Why does Newegg seem to do this so often. I went to the site as soon as I saw this ad and it had gone up $5. Now 30 - 10 instead of 25 - 10.
