Cotton, wool, and silk are the fibers you want against your body, particularly while camping and stuff where the risk of mishaps involving fire is so much higher. Synthetics, not so much. If it's not obvious why you should avoid melty plastic fibers, ask your local burn ward!
I'm a big, big fan of Thermasilk brand. They cost a little more, but the peace of mind is worth it.
