Does powering it off USB make the laptop produce more heat thus making it superfluous?

couldn't one of these be used in a desktop, just replacing one of the side panels of a tower? This would change the airflow from the standard wind tunnel (fan at back, intake at front) to drawing air from both ends of the case across the mobo, and out through the fans. Or is that undesirable?
