I will wait for the Orange-ray specs before buying this. What a scam!
I'll wait until these go for $20 for a 100-pack spindle. Sweet, thanks.
only about double the price of hard drive space per GB. I'll take 10 packs!
need a blu-ray drive first before i can even get this. is blu-ray really worth it?
nice one Sony for killing off yet another format due to high costs. Betamax/Blueray. Still this is about the best price I've seen the discs going for. I can finally transfer a 1997 mini-dv tape to optical media. . although too bad backing up a hard drive is so out of reach.
I wodn't buy this brand at all
What do I put on 25GB?
#7 **** of course
Not bad - I just bought a 15pk of Memorex BR-Rs for basically the same price per disc. Might pick these up too....or look at what other prices NewEgg has on BD-R media in bigger sizes (if they even have any).
I agree though that Sony really needs to find a way to drive this price down -- cut it in half and then it might not be so bad considering dual layer DVDs still command a decent price.
Any optical media (CD,DVD,Blueray) that costs more than hard drive space is a no-go for backing up data. It takes longer and is less reliable than simply buying another hard drive. I still buy a few CDs and DVDs for portability, but I would never use them for backup.
10 movies for $57, what a great deal!
#5 is kinda confused though, Sony didn't kill off a format with their Betamax players, recall that VHS won over betamax even though Betamax was actually better quality, mostly because the lower quality of VHS allowed more runtime per tape.
Same with BR, it won because of more capacity per disc, nevermind if the discs cost more, the players cost more, and Sony had already proven they shouldn't be trusted with standards given their anti-fair-use policies in general and propensity to kill farm animals in sacrifice.
Porn had a hand (yuck yuck) in the success of VHS as well.
I would say get the hardware in more homes and the media drop.
Then again, TeraDisc sounds like a better solution.
does it give me my own drm too?
It would be nice to have 50GB dual layer version.
Instead of waiting for Brokeback Mountain to come out in Blu-ray, nuisance_sucks can buy the BD blank and copy from his HD-DVD collection, if he can figure out how to rip it.
blue ray and dvd's are good as dead... watch out for streaming to your cablebox and gaming console. this is a waste of $$$
Yes #15 because everyone has a cablebox or gaming console...
Sorry try again.
I'm not sure where all the bandwidth is going to come from if everyone relies on streaming. Most don't have access to fiber optic. You can also use something like BD Rebuilder and transcode your BD to x264 and put it on a regular DVD. Hard to tell the difference most of the time. I don't even bother with BD most of the time as there are few titles that the better color sat and resolution make a difference in viewing.
Fry's (in-store, not sure about online) has Memorex BD-R's: 15 for $60. So that's $4 each.
Translating to DVD. 1 BR = ~5 DVD; 10 BR = 50 DVD; 10 BR -> $57, whereas 50 DVD -> $20; so BR are still ~2-3x the price of DVDs, capacity-wise.
