BATTERY LIFE is very important to me. I purchased one of these Vostro 1400s two months ago and it is an excellent machine. I purchased it for its battery life - if you can live with the 14.1" basic screen (vs. the 15.4" on the Vostro 1500,) and and can live with the basic on-board Intel X3100 graphics card, you really get least 3.5 hours (sometimes 4) with the std battery and >6 hrs with the 9 cell battery. Just for reference, I called Dell and researched the issue and the 15.4 has 15-20% less battery life and the upgraded graphics card can draw another 10-15%. I purchased more RAM for a total of 3GB, which reduces the load on the HD and can also extend battery life and speed up processing.
