Update: Price has since dropped another $50, down to $299.

Black Friday pricing has arrived early! Dell's really scraping the bottom with these prices. Dell Business has the Vostro A860 15.6" Laptop PC for $299 + $20 shipping = $319 shipped.

More beef than a current netbook, a bit more weight but you'll appreciae the DVD player

I agree...Walmart had a Compaq a Saturday or two ago with similar specs but 2Gb of Ram for $298...but you had to get there early (and, unfortunately, I didn't). But that is now my benchmark for a decent deal.

Yeah and black friday each store will have 5 at a low price and you'll wait in line only to be 6th and not get one.

I agree, Black Friday deals I've seen so far are shite. Walmart's got nothing comparable to their $299 laptop a few Saturday's ago. They need to do much better. I predict retailers will have a crap BF leading to better deals in December. Bring 'em on.

Can I wipe Vista on this and install XP? Any issues finding drivers?

#10, #11 agreed - don't be scared to pounce on a good deal at any time - that Sears Blu-ray player sale, gone in 15 mins

I picked up the 14.1" acer yesterday for about $50 more with tax. It's dual-core with 2gb of ram, so I think that makes it better than this. As for the walmart deal, I'm not too fond of Compaq -- friends I've known with Compaq notebooks had to get new ones in a few months because they just couldn't stand it or it broke.

And 15.6" in such an awkward size. But ram for laptops is so cheap! I saw 4gb (2x2) for 39.99 on newegg last night, looking to upgrade my own new laptop.

I fail to see how they are convincing people to attempt Vista on 1 GB of RAM; don't shoppers even read reviews anymore? (present, company, obviously, excluded)

Too bad the screen is so large. I would be all over this with a 13.3 or smaller.

2GB of ram will soon cost less than the postage stamp to mail off the rebate, you can reign in Vista basic to run anything a netbook would and more with 2GB. For basic uses the most disappointing part will probably be the 4 cell battery.

What about the Celery processor. Those are junk. #14's deal is much better.

I don't know what you guys are talking about with the RAM. The Toshiba I'm on right now had 1gig for the first 6 months with vista and it worked fine. A couple months ago I added 2 gig for $18. But for many people you have a desktop for your heavy use applications and use the laptop for more of your everyday use. This seems like a decent deal to me. Nothing too fancy but for $300 you can't be intending on gaming with it.
