I have an Intuos4 but i wanted to give this a try for my laptop since my intuos is the large model and entirely too big to travel with.

Initial impressions are I really like it. The multi touch is a really nice function. the 1024 levels of sensitivity is alright, but I'm just spoiled with the intous4. The sensitivity out of the box will need to be adjusted.

One MAJOR bummer about the bamboo is, while the shortcut buttons on the left hand side are user-defined, the shortcuts do not switch depending on which program you're using.

Wasn't happy about that at all, but the portability, and the use of multi touch with do what I need it to do. Fork out the extra 30 bucks and get the pen functionality... otherwise you're buying a 58 dollar track pad.

I get a funny "touchpad neuralgia" in my index finger if I use a laptop touchpad for any length of time.
I prefer a trackball. It takes up very little desk space and the cursor "stays put" when you let go.
