Don't get a 500gb hdd for more than $100 if you can help it. Try ebay to save on tax.

#2 that's only a problem for those with only ATA adapters. The same "problem" exists for those with only ATA adapters with SATA drives.

BestBuy has a 500GB SATA Seagate for $100 right now. Pick up in store to save on shipping (but have to pay sales tax).

Stay away from hard drives with 1Y warranty! These are the drives which likely to fail after your warranty expires. Why only 1 year? Because companies are safeguarding their bottom line. They know this by the rate of warranty returns.
Don't do the same mistakes I did. I've paid lots of cash for WDs and MAXTORs and all I have now is pile of metal bricks. Don't fall into marketing tricks which will make you think MAXTORs are just re branded SEAGATEs. See if they bear the same 5Y warranty first!

Sounds like #6 has bad luck. Most likely there is a reason, such as poor power, excessive heat, or a faulty controller which is resulting in your failing drives.

I have several 30-40gig drives (mostly Maxtor and WD) from the 2000-01 time frame that are still operational.

I have to admit I still have one operational MAXTOR, 60Gb. It survived all other MAXTORs. Too bad it produces noise like circular saw so I use it for archives only. Also I can't blame heat too much, power supply or controller - all drives were in the same place all the time. I've put DEDICATED fans with alarms for the MAXTORs. Still not enough - they all but one(mechanical failure) got lots of AMNFs which can not be corrected with remapping.
After going through all these troubles, I say stay away from drives with 1Y warranty. Your time is more valuable. I've lost both time and $$$. I don't care now where it is really MAXTOR or WD or SEAGATE. For the same price I choose the one who is giving me less troubles and the best investment protection.
