My guess would be 300 SATA is fast enough. 600 SATA is a larger pipeline but the needles and spindle speed doesn't even get near that anyhow.
The read/write speed of most newer HDs is about 80-100MAX so SATA 300 can handle that just fine. Why do we need SATA 600. I don't know if it's hype or what.
Pricing and Availability
As of this writing, the WD1002FAEX is rapidly dropping to just over $100. I expect it to dip below once volumes pick up.
