Never again... after two failed WD HDD's over the past two years, it's Seagate and others for me... just look at the respective standard warranty periods- it speaks volumes about the expected reliability.

#3.. you have very bad luck. My WD HD bought few years ago still running. Oh well, the quality may go worse since I havent bought any of WD brand in few years.

Tomshardware chose WD HD for their reference system, though.

WD used to always be craptastic. I figure they've worked out all the kinks by now, though, and a few months ago I picked up one of their 750GBs.

#3s experience is in line with my own. I got burned by several WD drives during the period that they went to the 1 year warranty.

I've been buying Seagate exclusively for the past two years, and I couldn't be happier. It's funny since 5 years ago you couldn't have given me a Seagate drive for free. Perhaps their turnaround means there's still hope for WD. It's a shame I just don't trust them anymore. (It's not as bad as Maxtor; but, close.)

I'd choose WD over Seagate anyday. From my experience they are faster, more reliable, and quieter. This is coming from a guy who really abuses hard drives. Get the 16mb cache though for the same price as linked by kaver.

Had 3 Seagate 7200.10 drives fail during the last year, one just RMA'd for the second time. WD 500GB and 750GB has been rock solid lately. They have a 3 year warranty vs. Seagate's 5 year warranty, but both are better than Maxtor's 1 year. I think Seagate's prices include the fact that you're going to get a refurbished replacement drive 3-4 years down the road.

      Seagate fan here as well.
But I admit, I did pickup up a 74gb WD Raptor today to play with as a system drive. I don't need oodles of giggies, going for speed.
      Only $100 + $9 shipping. compuvest.com
They have daily special dealio's too, maybe Ben will scan this post with his virtual bionic reticle and glean some deals our way.

No matter the brand is, everyone has the chance to get bad products.

Maybe there is a reliability report from a trusted resource for hard drives?

someone like google who runs huge hard drive clusters should know. they did release a failure survey study, but they did not name any brands. They did indicate brands are related to failure rates though, so it apparently isn't a luck of the draw. Too bad we don't know which one works best, or don't we?

#14, were you referring to this? http://compuvest.com/Description.jsp?iid=440146&cid=9&sid=334
This seems to be very good especially if you are looking for speed and for system use

Meeee tooo! I've never had a Seagate fail on me with their 5yr warranty. I've had 2 out of my 5 WD's crap out far sooner!
