What happened to the large capacity IDE notebook drives that were supposed to appear after the SATA production caught up to demand?
Most everyone has switched to SATA as of 160GB, with many dropping PATA altogether. It may have to do with the unifying commoditization of SATA and SAS, since they both use virtually the same, mechanical parts.
to check what interface your notebook has go to device manager and change the view to "view by connection". You should see the SATA controller/drive on the PCI bus
I guess with the throw-away cheap notebooks the older interface is not a problem since they fall apart before the technology changes. I have an IBM ThinkPad X31 that still works fine but has a PATA interface. But I won't buy a new notebook just to get a SATA interface.
