Yeah, but too bad it's only 5400rpm. The better deal is the Hitachi Travelstar 200GB at Best Buy for $143 with 10% coupon. It advertises as a 5400rpm drive but if you choose a unit with DTG in serial no., it's actually a 7200rpm drive. Fast, fast access.

Thanks for the heads up BodegaBay, going to have to go for that. I wonder when Solid State drives will be taking over?

#3: well, they're certainly coming eventually, say maybe 4 or 5 years, but for now, they're still far more expensive, don't offer much capacity, and aren't as fast as normal hard drives.

Edit: hmm, I'm going to have to correct myself. It would seem that some new SSD hard drives have come out, from Samsung, that outperform conventional hard drives, use less power, and offer somewhat similar capacities in notebook sizes. Link to an article about it: http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2007/11/05/samsung-launches-ultra-fast-ssd

price is still an issue though.

    Steve,

The deal is on hiatus now because BB raised the price back up to $172. However, check back every week to see if they lowered their price. It seems BB reduces it back to $142 every couple of weeks. I myself missed it on the first try but checked two weeks later and it was on sale again.

Here are the particulars of the deal on fatbacon:

    http://www.fatbacon.com/forums/messageview.php?catid=18&threadid=774604&highlight_key=y&keyword1=hitachi+7200

Here's a how-to guide to switch the drive out:

My best buy doesn't have the 200GB travelstars that you mention Sad But my post office had plenty of the moving packets with the 10% off BB coupon in them.

This WD drive is not bad--the transfer rates are really good, near the same as Seagate's a 7200 RPM drive. So maybe worth the power savings in a laptop. However, it has really slow access time so beware.

    Here's the details:

When did 2.5" drives drop so much? It doesn't seem like long ago that it was $150 for a 120GB drive.

yeah but perhaps it might be like last year when there wansn't much on sale for Black Friday. However, its' not a bad drive for an interesting price, but unless you neeed a small hdd i would say get a larger drive for less.
