I've had several WD external drives (Passports and MyBooks) and they've all been perfectly reliable, the bus-powered Passports have ALWAYS had sufficient power, even from older laptops. Only bad thing I can say about WD's externals is that their NETWORKED MyBook is a total unmitigated piece of baconnaise. The author of the software they use to manage and control that pig should be strung up by his/her balls.

Seagate - which many people seem to praise for their warranties - have been nothing but FAIL. Leaving aside their recent firmware problems on the 1 & 1.5TB drives, their external drives seem to be designed by monkeys. I know of 2 businesses that have had the Seagate desktop-sized externals fail fairly quickly, and the support was less than stellar.. I bought a couple 2.5" externals for backups and such - they FAIL at bus powering - even on a modern desktop! (Seagate = "click, click,click...).

Picked one up at the local store this morning. Seems pretty nice. Quiet, doesn't seem to heat up much. I was surprised that the outside case is plastic. It's probably gonna get scratched up pretty easy but that won't change the fact that it holds 500GB (465GB actually) and fits in your pocket. The USB cable is only 18" which could be good or bad but if you need longer, it's a standard USB mini plug so you can pick up a longer one most anywhere.
