not a deal at all
$130 @ Amazon
you can buy a Seagate 500GB notebook drive for $99 at newegg, and get a $10 Aluminum Enclosure case to make it external, with better warranty and large cache size. The WD cases are cheap plastic, less protection and doesn't cool drive efficiently.
+1 to newegg.
$20 less and i'll buy one. not deal on this one right now.
no deal here - just move on!
#3 um... there is not a single 2.5" drive SATA enclosure at newegg that has the same convenience level as the WD my Passport. The WD my Passport is bus-powered over a *single* connector rather than the dual, specialized, cables that most of the newegg enclosures use.
Why bother Ben?
Bestbuy.com has the blue Seagate 500GB 2.5" for $115 + tax
And it comes with extra dock and case for free.
Return the dock later and get $30 - 15% restocking fee back
Comes down to about $100
Nice idea #9.
Thanx #9. I ordered, and used a $40 Reward I had to use up. Found it at one of the 5 local Best Buys close to my home. Thanx again!
And #7, you're right. I gave up on external enclosures for 2.5". They logic uses extra power and the cables can be "playful" to say the least, to get the 5V @ 550-700mA required.
#9 nice
#11 Unless you have a older laptop (more than 3 years old) you shouldn't have any problems with USB current on 5400 RPM drives.
Even the current 320GB 7200 RPM seagate drives work fine off a single USB port on several recient Dell laptops I've used.
are you guys serious about 3rd party 2.5" enclosures needing extra power? i used a rocketfish enclosure with no such trouble.
I have this drive in the 320GB version, and what's interesting about the USB bus power is that the quality of the cable seems to matter. I hooked this drive up to my computer with a generic USB cable and there wasn't enough power to run it. But when I swapped the cable out with a higher quality one, it worked fine. So yes, single USB power, but make sure you use the included cable or another high quality one.
