I fail to see how this can be considered a "DEAL"?
isn't this way overpriced for a 500GB external?

yeah way overpriced. I mean it is a good drive and Western digital is a solid brand, but you can find cheaper drives out there or even purchase an enclosure and drive seperately. that way you can purchase the drive you want with a great reliability and warranty history and if it happens to fail or you need to increase the size you can always upgrade.

While it is a bit higher priced that a DIY kit in this form factor, it is conveinent and a good drive. They were $179 a BB last week.

If you're just looking for 500GB of storage, it's definitely not a deal, but if you need 500GB of portable storage, it's great. This drive is much smaller than almost any other external drive, and doesn't require a separate power adapter (it's USB powered).

That being said, as someone who has a need for portable storage, I'm going with a regular $100 1TB external and the $75 version of this drive that's 160GB. Best of both worlds.

I've been looking for portable storage as well, this price doesn't seem too bad for 500GB...then again I probably wouldn't really know what a "good" price was for this kind of stuff. Thanks for the info guys =)

This is not a good deal.

I got the Simpletech 2.5" 500 gigger for $120 back in August.
