So, like, no one has Western Digital horror stories?
They never fail? Only Seagates fail?
I've heard good things about this particular drive, but I have had so many problems with WD that I'm not willing risk it, even though $81 is a pretty decent price.
I've switched over entirely to WD and I do have this drive with no complaints. I had a series of Seagate drives fail and each of their RMA replacements had similar problems. After spending half the cost of the Seagate drives in mailing costs, I just gave up and went out and bought a WD Caviar Black to replace it.
I assume my experience with Seagate is atypical, but am jinxed with them.
All hard drives will fail, it's only a question of time, but WD does seem to make drives that are better at living past their warranty than most. The only one I've lost early was one that slipped out of my hand and down a flight of stairs... Some of the old Maxtors have good staying power too. Somewhere along the lines they started working with Seagate and everything went a little downhill.
Just remember, no matter the company, there is always the potential for you to wind up with the drive that got dropped by Fernando the delivery guy. BACK UP YOUR DATA!
#4 speaks the truth - mechanical devices will fail at a higher rate than solid state components.
I have had the worst luck with Maxtor drives (two out of four drives failed), even before Seagate bought them.
I've had the best luck with Seagate drives (zero failures out of six drives), but I skipped the .10 and .11 versions.
Years ago the WD Caviar drives were so bad I stopped paying attention to them. Funny how things change. I got a WD Passport USB drive from an employer two years ago and it has been so reliable and rugged that it changed my opinion of them.
interesting.. of all the drives i've had.. seagates failed the most.. i guess i'll give WD a try.. anybody know what drives lacie uses?
Nice price, but hard drives are the one component I'll pay a little extra for to pick it up at a brick and mortar.
This is a great drive. Have three of the 1GB "black" drives in various systems, not even a glitch. These are the only drives I recommend these days.
