Unfortunately, the bare drive will come wrapped in a layer or two of bubblewrap and in a box with some kraft paper type of packing material. The one I received was not carefully suspended in the middle of the packing material, but laying in the bottom of the box wrapped with one layer of bubblewrap and the packing material laying on top. of course, the box received the typical UPS/FedEx handling - I think they used it as a wheel chock until they had to deliver it. Turned out, thank goodness, it suffered no damage and is whirring away in my machine right now. As you can read from the reviews on 'egg, some drives don't survive the torturous trip.

My NewEgg drive arrived wrapped in bubblewrap in a box of foam peanuts. Of course it settled to the bottom of the box. Drive survived, however. I think they're tougher than we give them credit for.

Two posts and I haven't seen any "I got one last week / month / lifetime for only $xx how is this a deal?" message. Amazing.

I'm getting one from Amazon and one from Buy.com. We'll have to see if they're packed any better than Newegg.

I'm glad that WD now has 5 year warranties. Did Seagate go back to 5 also, or still bumped down to 3? Thanks

Got it a month or so ago for for bout $15 more from the Egg and love it! I hear its faster than the Green drives, so look into that if you plan on running programs off of the drive (versus using it for storage only).

I got two 640s from the egg like 6 weeks ago and they wrapped them very well.. they were in a styro disk "egg crate" type thing, then wrapped in bubble wrap, taped thoroughly, and some peanuts to fill in the spaces... there was no "play" for them to roll around in the box at all.. seemed like a solid packing job to me.

This may be the one component of a computer that you're better off buying at the store.

Rev, I hear some are shipped this way but I must say that mine came in the standard anti-static bag then bubble wrap then some peanuts (lots of em). It looked rather safe but definitely could get damaged if mishandled. Good thing Newegg has a great RMA policy.

Newegg sent me a survey regarding their "new packaging material", which is essentially heavy construction paper. It really does nothing more than occupy space. It serves no protective purpose. I ordered the green version of this drive along with a few other things and also got the wrapped in bubble-wrap and loosely packaged with the paper material. I haven't used the drive yet to know if it survived. I hope Newegg listens to their survey and makes a change.

Those "green" drives are really, REALLY slow. I didn't expect them to be that slow. I'll probably be picking up one of these.
