    SATA 3 yet it's 5400? Oxymoron much? Look up the performance between SATA 2 and SATA 3 for spindle hard drives, it's very oh-so slightly faster; and that's for 7200rpm. There's no point for SATA 3 with spindle hard drives, unless you're running 10K or SSD.

    economy of scale. there's a decent chance sata3 chips are cheaper than sata2, especially if it allows you to use one chip across the entire product line
