NewEgg.com has the Western Digital Elements 1TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive (WDE1U10000N) on sale for $120 with free shipping. It has a metal case for extra data protection, and uses a 3.5" Western Digital hard drive.

    With a crappy one-year warranty.

I bought a WD Elements 500G about 8 months ago. It is already dead. Yes, I can (and will) get warranty replacement/repair for it, but I've written off WD for future hard drive purchases. With that said, can someone tell me what drive manufacturer I *should* seek out for my next external purchase and next internal upgrade?

RagManX go for Seagate. They have 5 Year Warranty on their externals. Beware their internals will have a 3 year starting 1/3/09. I believe their ext is called the Freeagent. I also had my WD Mybook die just after a year. If your WD Elements still has data on it google the freezer method to get it off. Worked for me Smile

    Goodluck!

Ben, no need to say that it uses a WD HD. I doubt it would use a Hitachi/Samsung HD. Smile

Well I have had brand die on me so I can not give a good choice. I was one of the people with the 14 gb deskstar which was okay. Seagate get the drive with the NS at the end of the whole type of it and not the AS. AS dies pretty easily.

WD External drives are the worst too. I have those Mybook drives, 500 gigs each, and they are slower the molasses for copying files.

Seagate is going from 5 to 3 years warranty starting on January. Probably going to make them in obscure parts of China...
