imo, not worth paying 3 times the price for twice the storage of a 500
these are getting tempting, but #1 is right. the pricing needs to go down and be more relative to the smaller sizes.
Can you set up your own webserver with one of these? Paying extra for a NAS dribe might be worth it, depending on your application(s).
It would be nice to know about the possibility of a web server. I'm going to need something for off loading pictures on the fly, especially when I pick up the new Eye-Fi SD wifi card.
connect GB ether. worth it if you have a network.
Windows only. Great idea on having an ethernet outlet, but any other types of transfer? Also, must have good internet connection to make this worthwhile.
#6, it doesnt matter so much as the internet connection. Imagine having large movie or other data files and then hooking this up to a gbit connection. There would be great, but a 10meg internet connection wouldnt do much good.
Keep in mind this only transfers at ~5-6MB/s. That means it would take two and a half days of continuous copying to fill it. It would take 15-25 minutes to copy an average DVD image. It also can't stream 1080p Blu-Ray.
If that's unsatisfactory, consider getting a LinkStation Pro. It's 4-5 times as fast.
This can be hacked to add ssh, ftp, and web etc.. its a flavor of linux but gige card is TOO slow, performance out the nic is terrible. buddy had one and returned it.
GigE is too slow or their implementation is?
still too expensive. this is the regular average price online right now. wait for it to get lower.
The transfer rate isn't that fast. You only limited to usb and firewire. Get the seagate where you can do ESATA. Much much faster.
I mean, I think it's perfect for people who just legitimately need a lot of storage, not to stream movies from, etc. Maybe for professional photographers. I'd recommend it to my friend who consistently fills up his 250gig HDs with professional photos. After all, do you need such fast data transfer for something of that nature?
I agree with #1. If you decide to pick up a WD MyBook and plan on saving files larger than 2 GB, make sure to reformat the drive to NTFS. My 500 GB model is formated FAT32.
Reformatting is not a bad idea anyway as you can dump the My Book crap at the same time.
this looks very tempting, how fast does it go if i connect it to a network?
Ya know #16, if you're really interested, you would do a google search and find out for yourself how MANY owners complain of the poor access speed. It's nowhere near what it should be, even on a GigE network.
I was initially tempted by these drives for the possibility of running your own web servers without the need for a complete machine. I wanted to use less than 1Gig for webpages and the rest for backup/data. They really need to come up with a drive that does both USB/Firewire transfers and ethernet.
I think I did see it for cheaper, tho not much, a while ago. I bet price will drop after christmas
This was around 500$ in best buy about 6 months ago. I thought it was cool, but a little pricey. I use a 500GB WD and share it from a server. Works well for me.
