Ends today. Newegg has the Western Digital My Book Live Duo 6TB Personal Cloud Storage (WDBVHT0060JCH) for $480 - 15% off with coupon code WEDI531 [Exp 6/3] = $408 with free shipping. Features dual drives with drive spanning, remote access, 800 MHz CPU, and built-in media server.
I don't understand what you people are talking about. Have you ever used a NAS in your lives?
It uses GIGABIT ETHERNET. You connect it to your ROUTER or SWITCH, and as long as you have a DLNA capable device, it states "Streams to DLNA-compatible devices." That's *pretty much* ANY device.
The only thing that's inflexible here is the reading comprehension.
Anyway, it's very difficult to find a cheap NAS, as most diskless systems cost anywhere from $200-300 on their own. And then there's a 4-bay DROBO which can set you back $400.
^ Keep in mind it includes the 2 x 3TB HDD. Right now the cheapest 3TB WD drive on 'egg is $160 with a $10 off promo code, so you're essentially getting $320 worth of HDDs and a reasonably performing NAS for only $88 more which is a good deal "IF" you were needing to buy HDDs or put together a NAS right now anyway.
I prefer DIY NAS to get more HDD bays, but you can't come close to building a 6TB DIY NAS for $408 either unless you already had most of the parts needed besides the HDDs.
Go ahead and use a DLNA device to stream 1080p video across the network while keeping a good picture LOL And yes I have a 8TB WDSHARESPACE which I use as a media server and a western digital media player hacked with Brad firmware to stream to my TV. Not to mention the 2 million dollar data center I administrator for my job...
^ That's the going rate, if you need to get a job done then it costs what it costs. Of course if you don't need something right now it'll always be cheaper to wait till you do. Otherwise, even before the Thai floods a 3TB HDD was going for $100, so two would be $200... leaving $208 cost difference.
For $208 you can get a good start on something more flexible and with higher performance and/or more drive bays, but you can't finish the project without more funds or at least a lot more time setting up a 'nix distro to do it, if not both.
It's the same situation as with bare HDDs, you can wait but the world keeps spinning and needing capacity and functionality till the end in December.
That's the bottom line. When the end of the world comes in December, saving a few hours now will have seemed like a good idea.
I plan on living in the digital world come December, backed up to a NAS... so I wanted a longer warranty period even though I'm might be technically dead, I'll be alive on the NAS hard drive as an imaged copy of myself - sort'a like a Veeger thing... A device that only has a two year limited warranty doesn't seem to me to be a good place to start off for an eternal digital existence...
You don't impress me, kid. If you want picture quality, you don't use DLNA. Period. I have my own 6TB RAID5 storage that I have attached my 24-hour home server. When I want picture quality, I use my PC. Nothing wrong with that, and that's not what I was criticizing earlier "Don't expect plug in xbox ps3 blah Windows will be the only thing that recognizes it." This statement is incorrect, as you have so cleverly yourself pointed out in your previous post.
Also, there was one point in my life where I was thinking about spending my profession in a data center where I "administrator." But I realized the instructors and my classmates were complete [people with low intelligence], and I wanted nothing more to do with them. So good luck being a business admin. I'll continue being oblivious to poignant discussions such as this.
The apocalypse chat was very entertaining, however. I liked that part about a 6-month warranty being a lifetime warranty.
PS: dave, I did get a mediasonic/cineraid/something-or-other for about $100 and 4 x 2TB Samsung F4's around $90 each. So cheap can be done, but like you said, you need to have the spare parts. It's not a NAS alone, but aided by my own server. Of course, it doesn't help that HDD prices will not be coming down to those levels for quite a while yet.
What? no USB access. USB 2.0 port is for expansion only...
What do you need USB access for? It's networked.
Dont expect to plug this in xbox ps3 or other media player.
I think Windows is the only thing that will recognize it.
I'm out due its inflexibility...

I'm still out...
Then good for you, you made a baseless decision.
Anyway, it's very difficult to find a cheap NAS, as most diskless systems cost anywhere from $200-300 on their own. And then there's a 4-bay DROBO which can set you back $400.
I rendered reconsideration from your comment. I'm still out... but thanks for trying...
BTW, -15% = a shitty bargain...

#9, do you think buying two 3TB hard drives that offer only a two year limited warranty for $320 ($160 each) is a bargain?

I plan on backing up my life onto a NAS before December but I want something that has a longer warranty...
^ Anything with > 6 month warranty is effectively a lifetime warranty.

Hmm.... on the fence for this one...
