WD Drives are the worst. I had a 2TB drive full of data/all my pics, and BAM! crashed on me. only 6 months old. Stay away from the allure of low prices on hard drives.
Seagate Drives are the worst. I had a 2TB drive full of data/all my pics, and BAM! crashed on me. only 6 months old. Stay away from the allure of low prices on hard drives.
I'm not getting free shipping on my order. It says free shipping USA on the first page but during final checkout, Buydig is adding shipping $8.99 for 5-7 day. There's no option at checkout for free shipping.
Now that there are only two major players in town, WD and Seagate, I'm starting to fear that in the future ALL of my mechanical HDD failures will either be WDs or Seagates.
Both american HD companies have different types of drives. You want reliability then you have to spend more and get the enterprise or business HDs. These cost a lot more but they are better built and more reliable.
America business theory.
1.) You get what you pay for or can afford. Your choice. 2.) Planned obsolence. The sooner you need to buy another HD, the better the profits are for the companies. 3.) Eliminate the competition...Samsung got bought out. Hitachi got bought out. Both Japan HD maufacturers made way better and reliable drives than the domestic brands but now don't expect much from those brands anymore.
^ My plan has been a little different, to just have data redundancy and a new spare cold-swap drive lying around, though with the consumer grade drives I seem to have a far lower failure rate than some people, under 5% over the first 5 years.
Also at Office Depot at the same price. Call and have Staples price match either one, then apply a $15 off $100 or $25 off $100 coupon for an even better deal! I picked one up earlier in the week. The WD has a 2 year warranty (the similar Seagate only has a 1 year warranty.)
I work on a LOT of different systems, and 8 times out of 10 when I pull a failed drive from a machine or enclosure, it's a WD. Hard to believe that's a coincidence, or that there are so many more WD drives out there than others.

I've had 2 WD my books and they're fine, no problems. I'm guessing its luck of the draw.

Never had a problem with WD drives. *Knocks on wood* I have several some years old. Just got a new WD 2T drive. Hope #1 is an outlier.
