PC Connection has the Westinghouse 26" L2610NW Widescreen LCD Monitor for $230 with free shipping. 1920 x 1200 maximum resolution, 350 cd/m2 Brightness, 750:1 contrast ratio, covered by a 1-yr warranty.
YMMV, but I've been using this monitor for months with absolutely no problems. It is a pita to have to mute the speakers if you adjust brightness to avoid hum, and it has only a one year warranty. For this price, definitely worth it imo.
I have this monitor and yes, it not very high quality: - The DVI/HDMI does not work in highest res - Hum from the speakers at certain res and settings
For the price, it offers a lot of low quality real estate. With monitor prices dropping, I would recommend a 24" higher quality monitor for a little more money.
This monitor has severe ghosting. I can move this window around on it and I see little trails behind the text. This might not be an issue for anyone using the monitor for text alone, but I like to watch videos and play games so the ghosting is very difficult to ignore. The colors are quite washed out by default, but I was able to use my video card's software to even them out, so as long as you have a decent video card this may not be an issue. The color reproduction doesn't seem too horrible for a TN panel. If you modify the brightness on the monitor itself it will emit a buzzing noise unless you mute the speakers. Again a decent video card can fix this w/o using the monitor's settings. The dot pitch is pretty bad. You have to use the monitor at 3 feet away or else you can see the grid of dead space between the pixels. When my machine goes into sleep mode the monitor will go bright blue for about a minute before it decides that it should actually be asleep. I have 2 stuck pixels, not so bad for 2,304,000 total pixels. Fairly low, non-adjustable stand.
-- SEVERE ghosting, worst I have seen on any monitor ever. Everyone in Company of Heroes looks like they have auras as they move around the screen.
I think the bottom line is you just have to see the monitor for yourself to decide. If you can buy it a Costco for a little more, they have a great return policy. No shipping back needed, just take it to the closest store for a no questions asked full refund.
I agree with you #6 about the muting of the speakers and needing to make manual adjustments with the annoying buttons on the side of the monitor and/or from windows to get the display right. Once you do that though, the display should be just as good as any other TN based panel. Go to http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/panelsearch.htm to check on the panel technology used for a particular monitor brand/model, and you'll likely find many name brand 26" monitors are using the same panel as this Westinghouse in their design at a much higher price.
I have had zero ghosting with mine with games or texts, although others have reported it. For the price, still may be worth a chance, and it can be a good bargain.
Worst Monitor Ever.
