I thought it was always free.
When I signed up, it was free for a year and then $2 per year after. Not sure if that's still in effect. Works great by the way, assuming the other person has it as well. As mentioned, available on many different platforms including WP7.
this app only works for iPhone. It doesn't work with iPad...
