"Just think of the joy you'll have when it finally fails."
STFU
Western Digital Caviar GP bad or something?
Drobo + 4x these = 2.7TB of RAID space for less than $900. That's around .33/GB which was the price of the raw drives no less than 2 years ago.
Not worth the gamble.
You're going to need the redundancy if the manufacturer has so little faith on their drive's reliability that they only warranty them for 1 year.
Should I take a chance?
I seriously doubt I would buy anything from this outfit... their prices seem fishy to me. Wouldn't doubt all their stuff are refurbs or outdated drives. Good example of "Let the buyer beware"!!
I would advise all to avoid them at all costs.
Like LCD's there are a limited number of manufacturers. This is likely just a WD, Samsung, or Segate that is being sold at a lower price point.
As for reliability, storing data on any 1 drive is a recipe for disaster no matter how long the warranty.
So this outfit provides the warranty for the HD? Hmm...I think I will pass.
Anyone have any idea if they'll ever produce a 1TB 2.5" drive? Or will it be solid-state from here on out?
I remember 3 years ago, I bought a 40 gb hard drive for $80 (it was an emergency and that was the price at best buy).
Back ups are always nice.
perhaps in mirrored raid it may be worth a shot.
no 3 year warranty!
Aren't the Western Digital Caviar GP WD10EACS the 5400RPM drives?
White label? Even at this price I'll pass.
#4, #5, #6, #7, #9, #13, and #15 are flaming rodeo cowboy.
Don't chance it. Look at what you might get.
#10, 3.5" platters have approx twice the area of a 2.5" platter, so when you see 3.5" drives at 2TB capacity (probably 3 platters), then 2.5" drives will be available at 1TB capacity.
No, Manchester hard drives will be around for a long time to come. People have been saying that hard drives will be replaced by FLASH for a long time now (Intel has said it a number of times), and no, they under-estimated the advancement of HD data density and HD has been competitive all along. On the other hand, the semiconductor geometery shrinking (Moore's Law) will be slowing down, that means the FLASH data capacity increase will slow down in the not distant future. So unless they developed other viable solid state memory (other than FLASH), then HD will be here to stay.
would work nice in a raid, in case one did fail
With a one-year warranty it must be a WD.
