If you're a student (or not) with a working .edu email address and don't have a bias against using Microsoft products, then Windows 7 can be yours for $30. They're offering upgrade versions of both Home Premium and Professional for that price. In order to see Professional, you'll have to: Enter in your .edu email address, click the link in the confirmation email, and finally click on where it says "Need to join your school's network domain?".

Is the "Electronic Download" an *.iso that I can burn? Or do I need the Disk Kit for "Only $13"??

Those schools are the schools without .edu e-mail addresses that qualify, not a comprehensive list of all schools that qualify

$30 should be the standard price of upgrading after the whole Vista debacle. Me thinks Microsoft is trying to pull an Apple by charging for an incremental upgrade (service pack) to their OS.

I hate how it wont confirm if you ordered the 32 or 64 version! Kinda disheartening!

#15, I doubt you can run Win7 on a netbook, but you can upgrade from XP, Vista, and even 2000 machine.
"You qualify for Windows 7 upgrade versions if you are running genuine Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 on your PC."(microsoft.com)
#16, yes, multi-boot available, but you need to install the (full) old OS first.
#31, it allows you to choose either 32 or 64 version.

I got the confirmation email. Now I go get one. Woohoo!

"Microsoft has confirmed that computer users will be able to test its new Windows 7 operating system for up to 120 days before they need to buy it.Officially, the trial period lasts for 30 days, but a loophole has been found in the Windows 7 verification process that will allow computer users to "reset" this clock up to three times at the end of each 30-day period, thus extending the trial to a total of 120 days."

    The complete story...

Full credit to Telegraph UK. Ideal for cheapskates like me that don't find reinstaling the operating system every 4 months.

#33 doubt no more. I am running Windows 7 RC 7100 on a Dell Mini 9 with a SSD and it runs WAY better than XP. Windows 7 actually has enhancements to work better on SSDs then previous versions of Windows.

I am using Eset 4.x, however, you have to play with the firewall to share well. Kaspersky also works.
