Best Buy and Amazon are also listing this price. If your lucky you can get it tax free and with a disk not the extra $14.99 MS is charging. From everything I read, any version of XP or Vista can be upgraded to any version of 7 and get this pricing including OEM. My guess is they have been trying to do away with XP for years, but can't get people to switch to Vista, so by offering lower pricing on pre-orders of 7 more people will chance it. Leaving MS to only have to support Vista and 7.

Ha ha ha! XP support "Requires download of Windows XP Mode (which run on Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate) and virtualization technology such as Windows Virtual PC." Come on Google, save us all from eternal dalmations.

My local Fry's is advertising a Lenovo 15.4" laptop with an Intel Dual-core mobile processor, 3 gigs of RAM, and a 250 gig HD for $420. You also get a free upgrade to Windows 7 after the release date. Is this as good a deal as it appears to be?
I'm of course reluctant to post a legitimate question on this site with all the apparent nut cases lurking to post their filthy, pathetic, venomous responses, but I'm hoping that there are a few of you who possess the knowledge to reply appropriately. I have waded through the filthy nonsense in the past to glean some very useful information... perhaps it can happen again.
No one asked, but if I were approached to comment on the postings here, I would have to say that a good many of them appear to be the product of dull-witted malcontents who, if they possessed ANY intelligence at all, would probably be producing viruses. So I suppose that Ben is doing a public service by providing a benign, harmless outlet for them.

#31, it all depends on what yo want to do. Are you buying that lenovo and then upgrade that to Win7? Or are you hoping to use the Win7 upgrade on another machine? In any case, I saw that add too. I am tempted. But they also have a similar Toshiba for 388. From what I can tell, the Fry's ad said any machine purchased AFTER June 26. It is there way to get people to NOT wait and buy a machine now versus waiting for Win7 to be pre-installed which could take a month or so till the old inventory with Vista is depleted.

Just boycott Windows 7 & start a campaign to save Vista so we can keep it around for another 7 years.

#31, you really know how to make friend, don't you. No wonder you have such a problem with "dull-witted malcontents".

As for your question, Fry's business model is to buy lots that don't pass random inspections, sell them for cheap, and have a HUGE return line for when the failures get returned. Yes, it sounds cheap to me but I am wary of Frys in general.

you can use the upgrade win7 to upgrade it from itself just like vista. in other words a "full install" disk is a ripoff just like with vista. you can full install with the "upgrade" version with no prior windows OSes at all.

if you are worried about your settings transferring then i feel sorry for you. start over already. backup your data and start anew.

OMGZ its so complicated, hurr durr
