i remember when Windows XP was released and people hated it saying its bubbly interface was akin to fisher-price toys. it must make computer n00bs feel superior to say that they're familiar with old versions of Windows.
it's one thing to be dumb fanboys oooh-wowing at every new feature change apple makes but it's also stupid to hate change just because you're inflexible and so bad at learning new stuff.

I think you miss the point of people who are rejecting Windows 8 for desktops. They don't appreciate Windows 8 because it's designed mostly for touch screens portable devices and is very awkward to use for a non touch screen desktop. It might be fine for a touch screen portable device but it falls short for existing desktops. I'm not sure if a touch screen desktop would be better then existing pointing device desktops. My arms aches just thinking about it.

WinXP's color gradients are less ergonomic, it takes the eye and mind longer to distinguish the controls and iconic symbols. If you are a slow user you may not notice, but power users do. WinXP has a dumbed down interface where you have to read questions and wade through dialogs to get the same jobs done, again it takes longer for those experienced with both os. This became worse still with the move to Vista and today.
Learning new stuff is not so useful when the new stuff takes longer, is more bloated, and really only benefits those that have never used windows before or when there is no keyboard or mouse. Why not let those who can't use windows learn the new stuff instead of slowing down the entire world's productivity?
The Win2K interface was the golden era, if only MS would have bolted new hardware tech and security onto that, which they did do to produce WinXP, then Vista, then 7, and now 8, but without screwing up the interface more and more with every version. Windows is now more pretty and esthetically pleasing but from a usability standpoint it is worse, unless you are using a portable touchscreen.
They used to ask "where do you want to go today", now it's more like "this is what you're going to do today, sheeple".
