Why not just buy Windows 7 upgrade when it comes out. I am sure it can upgrade from XP to Window 7 and still be around 90 bucks...
I have a couple of questions, if anyone knows for sure:
1. Is it possible to upgrade to Win 7 from XP Pro VLK version?
2. If possible, is the upgrade portable, meaning can I reinstall the upgrade after swapping out a motherboard in the future, for example? Or will it be like an OEM version (e good only for one motherboard)?
I took a chance and tried ubuntu, just once, but I still got AIDS. Man, life ain't fair.
# 21 I believe the upgrade version of Win'7 home premium is going to cost $120.
I am a "student" at australia.edu
I am also hosting a Win 7 party.
Anyhow, from what I saw at the 741 purchase page, you CAN do a fresh install by selecting "custom installation" on the setup screen.
Oh, just sayin (if you didn't understand my winky) if you need to think about going to school, and you are interested in a precious ".edu" address, Australia is a GREAT place to check out.
This is from the windows 7 installation help page...
"Installing a custom version of Windows. Choose Custom to completely replace your current operating system, or to install Windows on a specific drive or partition that you select. You can also use Custom if your computer doesn't have an operating system, or if you want to set up a multiboot system on your computer."
sorry, multiple post'd
Agree with #20. Linux (any distro) FTW.
For any needed Windoze functionality, run it under a Virtual Machine.
@20/28 If you plan to run your software on an unfinished and incompatible system you might as well just put Vista back on. Emulation is a bandaid, not a solution. How much is your time worth? I'd rather spend $100 on Win7 than countless hours making a program work on a VM. My time is worth more than that. Then again I'm not a fry cook and your situation may differ. Vista was bad, 7 is good, and Linux will never be an option. Get over it.
7 runs beautifully on everything I've deployed it to. It runs just as well as XP on a 700mhz machine I've had since 1998. I wasn't expecting results to be that good. It found all the drivers itself, even for the Creative audio card... which absolutely boggles my mind.
"plus free Windows 7 upgrade coupon for $90 with free shipping"
Careful now, your ignorance is showing. Anyone who would attempt a (1) fresh load VISTA 64 and (2) then upgrade to Windows 7.
Microsoft upgrades are as smooth as sliding down a sandpaper banister. If you're willing to go that way...so be it.
But anyone who knows more than what they've read on the back of the box knows Windows 7 should be a clean full install - to reduce the possibilities of .dll conflicts.
So - I stand by my original comment.
If as #26 stated you can do a complete (fresh) install using the Windows 7 Upgrade, then .
But why buy VISTA anything? Just get the W7 when it is a more reasonable price.
Why use windows instead of Ubuntu?
Because users don't know what tar files are or winrar or how to activate a console so they can install new software using some high tech command line options they thought died with DOS.
And if they get it running, they might want to do some video editing and aren't sure if CUDA or AVIVO will run under their particular distro in a virtual machine.
Why would anyone buy the first edition of a new OS?? Always wait for at least SP1. Have we learned anything?
LOL @ #20
Ubuntu is great, too bad none of the software I use all the time will run on it.
#22 Last I heard you cannot do an upgrade install over an XP install, only over a Vista install. So clean install only if you're running XP. That may not be what you were asking, though.
#22 I have reactivated Vista OEM after a rebuild on a new mobo, you have to call MS and jump through some hoops, I don't think I even needed to talk to an actual person.
#33 Win 7 pre-release candidate smokes Vista. Of course, you may actually like using Vista.
