Does it actually remove the copy protection scheme on DVD's
Yes it does. I downloaded it yesterday and I have ripped 10 DVDs so far and I can confirm that no more copy protection. I used Handbrake before but it couldn't remove the copy protection.

If I just want to rip discs (without any conversion to an MP4 based format), is there any reason to use this over DVDFab? I've been using the free version of that for years to rip my collection to my server.
