Urggg.. the evolution of 9600GSO.
First it was 92 stream processors, later the 512MB version cut to 46 stream processors, but at least with 256bit bus to compensate some of the performance loss. Now we have a 1GB version, with 46 stream processor, along with a 128bit bus! It has been successfully evolved into a 9500GT!

#3 -- Never looked at it like that, but it stands to reason. Meaning both are working DDR2 on 25.6 GB/sec of memory bandwidth with that bus. I believe you meant "Shader Processors", which this has 48 verses the 9500GT that get 32 SP. The real difference is this 9600GSO would consume a bunch more power.

This is why the 4670 and DDR3 is such a excellent contender. Stronger at game play, lower power like the 9500GT, but the best is they can save you on the purchase price like $15.

exactly how can they still call this card a 9600GSO? It's a completely different card than the other 9600GSO, half the shaders and a slow 128bit bus. The 1GB of RAM is completely useless due to the slow memory bus. At the very least they should have changed the name to "9600GS".

Imagine what would happen if they released a GTX 285 that had half the shaders(of a normal GTX 285), a 256bit bus, and 2gb of RAM. I'm sure they'd also price it about the same, just to further infuriate consumers.

Obviously, this is not a deal. Get a Radeon 4830 for $65 or so on sale, both a lower price and much higher performance.

They should have changed the name to "9500.5POS".
It is sad to see the G92 chip being gelded to this stature and at a price it's an absolutely indignation of the sanity Nvidia marketing has toward its customers.
Or it tells me how bad there yeilds are at TMSC...

#7 - Nope no driver support, just use the Penguin if you're still on 95 and need something on the cheap.
Nvidia is in a bad way what is in the near future that could might pull then out of their mid-range doldrums? The glimmers are either GTS250-512 and Core 216's when their price is competitive. Everything below that for-get-about-it.

nVidia can't be hurting too bad if their board partners are still pricing stripped down 9600GSOs at $70AR... and from the reviews it looks like at least 32 people bought one in the past 4 months (probably a lot more people, considering Newegg's sales rates there's no way even 1/3rd of the products sold get reviewed) at a price probably higher than this.

Wait a few weeks, get a 4770 and o'c it till it can't take any more punishment or you get tired of the ATI drivers, whichever comes first. They're presently averaging about $100-110 so with a rebate they'll be down around $70-85, eventually even lower if 'egg has a coupon discount simultaneously which they often do, like back when the better version of 9600GSO was priced low enough to be a deal.

#9 -- That proves one thing there are plenty of suckers out there.
With your reasoning look at the XFX 4770 its' been out like a month and 19 eggheads have gotten one and 16 are excellent reviews. So based on your reasoning in a month 60 have purchase them an 85% are very happy.
This is just a waste of $70; so many cards will blow this away for $20 less, others just $20 more.

Honestly the day of the 192-Bit 768Mb GDDR3 with 96 Stream Processors is probably adios Newegg no longer has them, but Fry'd does.

sure, that's one of the cards with the faster G92 core, but the slow memory cripples it. Do you even know what GDDR2 is? GDDR2 came out before DDR2, and it's essentially DDR1 with some small enhancements. Now, the memory bandwidth is a function of both the speed of the RAM and the width of the bus. The memory bus on the good 9600GSO's is cut down to 192bit, but it still performs pretty well due to the GDDR-3 most cards use.

But, the card you linked drops back to a 5 year old memory standard, which, in combination with the lower memory bus width, completely cripples the memory bandwidth on the card.

It would seem that both nVidia and the board manufacturers are intent on crippling 9600GSO's.

Back last year when the good 9600GSO's were on sale for $37 a few times, that was a really good deal. Since then they've gotten more expensive, and the specs are falling apart.
