Man, $1000 doesn't buy what it used to. Back in the day you could get a 3ghz computer for half that.
I don't know what day that was, but I'm not sure a 4.6 lb laptop qualifies as an ultra book
I just bought the i7 version of the xps 14. It's really a beautiful laptop - constructed every bit as well as a MBP. It's not really an ultrabook, at least as far as I interpret the marketing term (but it does technically meet Intel's specs for a 14" ultrabook, so they can officially call it one.)
It's just a thin laptop. The gorilla glass - I think - plays a big part in the weight, which is definitely heavier than it should be.
I swapped in an SSD for the spinner, and with AHCI boot enabled, this thing is crazily fast. Boots, sleeps, and resumes in seconds. Both photoshop and illustrator cs6 launch in about 2 seconds.
It's a little pricer than I think it should be, but it's overall a really nice pc.
Kind of bought a "trial" unit from Best Buy (they didn't have one on the floor) but returned it a few days later with a dead fan. I agree 100% with #3 -- it really is a super machine and has many, many positives. I especially liked the screen, though it is pretty glossy and some owners have complained about it and the viewing angles.
As long as you don't call it an ultrabook, it's fine. But it feels suspiciously heavy for ~4.8lbs. Probably the Gorilla Glass, the larger battery, and the solid unibody construction that creates the illusion of greater weight.
I should note I had a great experience with wifi, but it looks like there are reports of problems both the 14" and 15" XPS models:
