Straight in your face because it is Front-Firing
I've got your long-stroke cone right here.
Seems like a pretty good deal for a pretty reputable brand. I can't find much in the way of reviews (besides a few at Vann's which are all positive) but with only this much money on the line it's not a big gamble to give it a try. Free shipping is nice too. I'm in!
active? so not powered? or is that passive?
I believe it's powered.
I checked and yes, it's powered, using AC120V 60Hz.
i believe i have this- i know i can turn this sucker up loud enough to bother the neighbors ... which sux cuz i don't get to bump it ... but i got it cuz the price is excellent, and the performance is great so far!
Not really a deal - several vendors at about the same price.
Besides the Yamaha unit doesn't have deep enough bass as Velodyne does. Sound quality matters....
I would recommend the Velodyne as well for a few dollars more. Circuit City just cleared a bunch out and they were cheap.
get serious - hsu research

Velodyne is not typically "a few dollars more" than Yamaha. In the "audiophile" realm HSU is popular and also SVS subwoofers.
I own a SVS 29-39 PCi, and the filament in my ceiling light bulb went out while testing it out. Happened twice.
If you're looking for some serious volume, I'd recommend SVS in a heart beat.
