Newegg has the ZyXEL PLA401V3 Powerline Ethernet Adapter Kit (PLA401V3KIT) for $75 + $1 shipping = $76 shipped. Uses your existing power lines to provide internet access at up to 200Mbps around your home without running long cables.
I have several "powerline" adapters and they work ok. It really depends on how noisy your house wiring is. Some outlets get me around 5mbps and others as little as 512kbps. That's ok for the kids' browsing but no good for any streaming. Also, your house is a hub and the "bandwidth" of your house wiring is shared. The more adapters, the more collisions. That said, good luck getting 200 mbps.
#2: for someone to tap into it, they would first need to know that you use Powerline when most ppl have no clue such a thing exists and then these individuals would need to know the type of adapters you use.
Once these steps are accomplished, this individual would need to locate an external power outlet and then somehow set up a computer for monitoring the traffic on your network or browsing the network for the exact computer that has the information they seek.
For someone to go to this level of trouble, they would have to know in advance what they are after and that means you have revealed something to them that makes them want to tap into your network.
I purchased one of these to test 7 months ago. Great concept but not great. It all depends on how far it has to travel through power line. Speed is awesome if on the same circuit(same room) but dial-up speed a few rooms away.
I use Plaster Networks adapters to stream all over the house. Works fantastic- no stuttering ever. They cost a bit more but you get what you pay for. I had a friend try some Belkins and couldn't stream Google TV. He bought the Plasters and is very happy.

apart from the "noisy" wiring, shouldn't the main concern be the possibility of someone tapping in to your powerline network?

What happens when it malfunctions one day and lets 110V run to your ethernet port?

#2 someone could do so. However, the newer ones come with management so you can encrypt the traffic.
