Microsoft.com has a free download of Virtual Server 2005 R2 Enterprise Edition. You can also request a CD, but that will likely take months.

This runs on Windows Server 2003 btw ... most regular people will want Virtual PC (not Virtual Server), which isn't free.

#2,
Interesting, because I am currently running Microsoft Virtual PC 2004.
Virtual server *does* work on XP, but not in production mode. Kind of limiting.
And what's your beef with "Penguin people"?

so, why not just pick up a copy of VMWare Server which is always free? http://www.vmware.com/products/server/
btw, the "Penguin people" would be pushing you to use xen. :) www.xensource.com/

Use VMWare's virtual server. Its better and also free because of this.

Not quite. Microsoft virtual server is free because VMWare started giving away the basic version of their virtual server, and Microsoft can't sell anything to compete against a free product with tons of exposure already.
Its like IE vs Netscape all over again.

Outstanding - people can always find a way to bitch about free stuff...
Hey, from a long time VMware user and one of those Penguin People, Virtual Server really isn’t a bad product if you already have Win2k3 and would like an interface that’s familiar. Don’t get me wrong, I think that VMware produces a somewhat superior product (especially when you hit ESX – no comparison there), but anyone can fire Virtual Server up and have a slick environment in no time at all.

I was just at the MS kickoff event for MS-SQL & Visual Studio. Curiously, the MS presenters all used VMWare!

Do note that this is an "eval" and times out after 180 days. Even worse, if you install an OS in a virtual session, you will have to activate it. This will use up an install, and once your eval version times out, you will lose that install permanently.

#9, and the server BETA VMW offers is free because the price for MS Virtual Server was a fraction of GSX Server.
#17, but VMW is saying that the OS and virtualization should be separated since MS is going to include VM technology in future OSes, except of course when they're doing it.
#19, sure they did, that's a big no-no for MS.
#20, you are completely wrong, its free, forever. Its not an evaluation, its the full version.

I don't think I have it.
I don't need it.
I don't Want it.
I don't know what to do with it if I get it.
After reading the above coments I now now nothing more that before I read them.
If I do get it will I become rich like Bill Gates?

It's true that XP has to be activated, but MS allows reactivation every 120 days.
