I just bought a Chromecast from Groupon and after using it for a couple of days I find I can do BETTER by hooking my phone to my TV. I bought a bluetooth mouse and had a HDMI cable to attach the phone to my TV.
I have no incompatibilities with software or hardware I have with the Chromecast. I can use whatever software that's available for Android without having to wait for it to be developed for Chromecast. I can use Chrome, MX player, Netflix, Hulu Plus, any other Android app in the playstore.
    Amazon
Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV work no better than my phone.

Define "better'. Roku is just simpler to operate imho and it's always hooked to the TV. Meh.

What I can agree with is this - you don't necessarily need the
    Amazon
box to enjoy all these services. There are choices.

I just bought a Chromecast from Groupon and after using it for a couple of days I find I can do BETTER by hooking my phone to my TV.

That's exactly the point of the Chromecast:
    1) you don't have to use a cable (not all Android phones support MHL, not all MHL supporting phones can use the same cable)
    2) other people may want to display something on your TV from their phone or computer

If all you ever want to do is connect your own personal MHL-capable phone to your TV, Chromecast has nothing to offer.
    Roku or
    Amazon
Fire TV, on the other hand, are always there even when your phone isn't; so they may be good options for a family TV -- but if you're the only one to ever use this TV, then yes, there's not much of a point bothering with anything other than an MHL cable.

Had one since April 2014......LOVE IT!
I thought the voice thing was weird when I first seen the GB commercial, but I use it ALOT.
