It looks like if you get the phone deal above, you have to sign up for their paid monthly services. Only the first month is free. When you click on the link, the plan choice is already pre-populated with no opportunity to switch to the free plan.
^ You order it with the one month premium plan free trial then contact them before the month is over to switch to the regular free plan.
Your subscription for Services will continue until you terminate your Services by using the Support feature on our Site, or by calling FreedomPop at (888) 743-8107
Why do I get the feeling that cancelling the paid plan isn't going to be easy. Sounds way too much like the old scam of signing up for a 'free' plan, yet then it's virtually impossible to cancel the paid plan you have to sign up for to get it.
On top of that, reviews seem to indicate that Freedompop has a very narrow criteria to get the free stuff. You 'must' use their service (or get charged for non-use), but you can't use too much (and get charged for exceeding what's allowed).
Its easy to cancel but you have to call them... can't do it just online. They are SOLD OUT though.. offer to upsell to the Samsung Galaxy SII for $79 going.

You can't really rely on old reviews because they've relaxed the terms of their service some. I could be wrong... since I haven't read the terms recently... but IIRC they dropped the charge for non-use and you can set your account to not allow data overages instead of incurring the fee.
Probably true but, c'mon, they've got to make money somehow, right? And what other way are they going to do it other than getting people to commit to some kind of payment plan immediately, then hope they don't cancel or, better still, don't read the fine print and start charging out the wazoo.
Or maybe your phone is constantly inundated with ads. Simply put, they're not going to make it easy to just pay one initial fee for a cheap phone, then give you free service from then on without some kind of hook for more cash.
FP is OK< but you can't depend on it, so it should not be your primary phone.
Text and Data, I have no complaints.
Phone call...yikes...horrible call quality and LAG!
Updated to newest version today...now when I make calls, the person on the other end can't hear me...called Tech Support...on hold for 1.25 hours...worked with tech for 40 more minutes...end result...still doesn't work...they get back to me in 24 to 72 hrs...LOL...Like I said, for free, it's ok...but don't be totally dependent upon it or it will leave you in a world of hurt...I can't make phone calls with it for 1 to 3 days now...all because I upgraded to "improved" version...
my retired phone using wifi with talkatone sounds much better than the freedompop phone, using their cell towers. It's 4g capable, but i have found that where i live and work, it's not available. But, when i do come by chance to where there are 4g coverage, it rivals my Verizon wireless phone, although the ping is a whole lot higher.
although i do not rate their quality high, i do like their customer support, although with higher volume of customers, their response time has gotten a whole lot longer. I was able to get customer support email and solve the problem the very next day.... now i'm lucky if it's within a week.
