Tempting. Anyone recommend this? I have a 7 year old home NAS (Buffalo Linkstation) that is ready for an upgrade.

I have the base model.... looks great, easy to set up. Fails even quicker. I tried next model up, returned it as it was defective. Not sure about this. But if the one's I've seen had worked they would be more then worth it.

If you check on newegg they have a pretty bad incidence of being defective.

$40 mobo, $20 CPU, $25 memory, $20 PSU, reuse ATX case (free), $5 USB flash drive to boot open source OS. $110 for a 5+ bay NAS with standardized, user replaceable parts.

^ but then the machine will consume more power than a dedicated NAS.

^ Yes a little bit, but the more drives you have the smaller the % difference is. You can also underclock it and with the advanced power management modes today's CPUs have, the difference isn't going to be much compared to a NAS with decent performance versus the sluggish ones.

To put it in perspective it's not hard to get down to 20W before any drives are spinning which is pretty close to what 3 good, 2 bay NAS would consume for the same 5 drive support, but actually I just pulled that number out of air since most motherboards have 5 SATA ports now. Toss in a $20 SATA card and you have 4 more ports.

Even so, if it consumes 10W more than a pair of NAS that's around $10 a year higher power bill. That'll keep it less expensive for the first several years, maybe even the lifetime of the system and there's also the option of building it out of used parts to lower the initial investment.

Stay away from this. NAS device failed me after a year. Just outside of warranty. I also recommend Synology
